00 : POWERS

Abilities Explanation

Ghost Girl has some spooky powers that can be kind of annoying to keep straight, so here's a handy reference page that attempts to delineate them as clearly as possible, for you and for me! Hopefully it is helpful!

0. The Reason For Her Powers

Grace's "spirit" (her soul or aura or psychic energy or whatever you wanna call it) is noticeably untethered from her body. Whatever happened while she was dead for eleven minutes booted her back into her corporeal body wrong, and now she's slightly unstuck from herself in a way that normal living beings aren't, which leaves her with some side effects.

By purposely moving her spirit independently from her physical form, she can shift partially in and out of the physical, living plane in various ways that result in a couple of what she calls "Forms", an invisible form she calls "Invisible Form" for entirely uncreative reasons, and "Ghost Form", which is slightly more creative but just as descriptive. She also isn't generally affected by gravity in the same way as normal physical creatures, due to her being unstuck from the physical plane, which allows her to fly.

WHAT YOUR CHARACTER KNOWS:
If your character has any kind of preternatural sensation powers, like ESP, Aura-reading or Force Sensitivity, they will be able to sense that Grace is not where she should be. She is, in fact, two inches to the left of where her physical body would indicate her to be. And she is there, that is her body and she exists in it. She is just also, simultaneously, two inches to the left. This sensation is generally found by these types of characters to be disorienting and unsettling.

1. Flight

Grace can fly! This is a thing she can do always, in any "form", even her otherwise normal human body. Generally she prefers to hover a few inches off the ground and sorta float gently around in place of walking, occasionally she'll do some tricks and sweet flips and the like, sometimes mock-sitting in the air, usually in a curled-up hugging-knees position.

Her top speed is about 65 MPH, and she can maintain that for a few hours without needing a rest, depending on what form she's currently taking. Aside from distance travel, though, she sticks to a common human walking speed for her floating around, unless she's attempting to be spooky-scary-ghostie by zipping around creepily on purpose.

WHAT YOUR CHARACTER KNOWS:
If your character has any kind of preternatural sensation powers, like ESP or Force Sensitivity or the like, they will be able to tell that Grace is able to do her flying due to manipulation of her own spiritual energy, her "soul" or "ghost" part of her, in a way that normal living humans shouldn't be able to do.
If they have super-senses, like those of Daredevil or Toph Beifong, they'll be able to tell through vibrations that her physical form is most definitely actually floating, and it's not just a trick of the light.

2. Incorporeality, or "Ghost Form"

When Grace chooses to shift into "Ghost Form", she sheds her corporeal body and becomes an aetherial, ghost-like being of pure spiritual energy. In this form, she is completely incapable of touching, or being touched by, any physical objects, and will instead pass completely through them. If she picks up an object or touches a person before shifting forms, and shifts while still touching the person or object, they will also become incorporeal and unaffected by gravity, and will remain so until let go of by Grace.

Ghost Form Grace looks as if she were made of living smoke, translucent, and wispy at the edges, almost appearing to dissolve into the air. Her colors appear desaturated and softened, like a watercolor drawing with the lines erased and just the color left behind. She does not require continuing involuntary body functions in this form (such as breathing or blinking), and when she speaks or produces sound, it has the audio effect of sounding as though it is echoing from very far away, and yet somehow simultaneously being right next to the listener, possibly even coming from inside their head. It is generally agreed to be very creepy.

Passing through a living being with a central nervous system (or artificial lifeform which is powered by electricity) in this form will disrupt the electrical signals in that person’s brain, causing them to immediately fall unconscious and experience a form of seizure which causes hallucinatory nightmares. This seizure can last anywhere from minutes to a few hours, and may cause lasting side effects for the victim including post-traumatic stress and paranoia. It is her only directly offensive capability, but due to its traumatic effect on those it is used on she finds it extremely distasteful to use and will never choose to use it unless absolutely necessary (think: a matter of life and death). This effect is, like all offensive superpowers, totally negotiable on an OOC basis in every situation, and can even be totally and permanently negated for the needs of the player or their character. Please don't be afraid to ask me about this, I will always work with you on what you need!

WHAT YOUR CHARACTER KNOWS:
If your character has ESP, a "Sixth Sense", Force Sensitivity, any sort of spiritual sensitivity or "second sight" type of powers, they will see a much more straightforward, solid view of Grace while using that power to observe her in her Ghost Form. She will be easily sensed as being A Ghost or whatever your universe terms it, but there is still an undeniable Aliveness to her as well. They will be able to sense that, while she is not currently in her body, and though her body is not currently on the same plane of existence, it still exists elsewhere and she is still, somehow connected to it. It will be an unsettling sensation, "wrong" in a fundamental way but difficult to describe in specific terms.
If your character has Telepathy or is Empathic or otherwise able to sense mental activity in others, your character will be able to sense Grace as normal in this form. Telekinetic abilities, however will not effect her, as she is not physically extant.

3. Invisibility, or "Invisible Form"

One of her other cut-and-dry abilities, Grace can become invisible. Normal "human" visual wavelengths, cameras and other forms of light-based visual detection methods will not detect Grace in this form. Light, including lasers, Phasers, Lightsabers or other light-based weaponry will pass directly through her.

She is, however, physically still there, in her corporeal body, and can be touched, heard, smelled, and otherwise sensed as normal. In her Invisible Form, Grace still needs to eat and sleep as well as to breathe and blink and continue with involuntary bodily functions. Any visible object she picks up while in this form will appear to be floating. If she picks up an object before shifting into invisibility, then shifts while holding the object, the object will also become invisible. This behaves the same way with people; if Grace touches them and then shifts while touching them, they also will become invisible.

WHAT YOUR CHARACTER KNOWS:
Animals or beings with enhanced perception, like thermal vision, Infrared/Ultraviolet vision, super-vibration sensing abilities, aura detection, etc. will still be able to detect her in those ways, but she will remain visibly undetectable on normal light wavelengths.

4. Limits and Weaknesses

In addition to everything previously noted, Grace cannot remain in either form indefinitely. The longer she is invisible or incorporeal, the more “drained” she becomes, and if pushed to her limits, she will fall unconscious and return to her normal, visible human form for a period of eight to ten hours, or a normal night’s rest. Grace cannot remain in either form for longer than 36 hours without requiring a ten-hour rest.

While she can be invulnerable to physical injury when in her Ghost Form, she is still susceptible to mental or “spiritual” modes of attack, like telepathy, empathic manipulation, even probably something like a Ghostbusters proton pack could stop her in her tracks. While she is majorly spooky, she is not malevolent by any means, and is still a young lady with a brain full of neuroses, plenty vulnerable to good old fashioned emotional manipulation. Probably more so than most!

If you have any questions or concerns about any of these powers, please feel free to comment on this post, message me here, or contact me on Plurk, and I will do my best to find a solution for us both! The good thing about playing an Original Universe OC is that I can tailor her powers to your/your character's requirements without having to worry about canon-breaking, so please do not be afraid to come to me with anything you need! Anything important will absolutely be added to this post as they come up, for easier future reference.

THAT WAS A LOT OF WORDS I hope they were helpful ones!! Thanks for playing with this ridiculous ghost person!!
